Daft Friday: A Night in the Upside Down at Glasgow University Union

Stepping into a World of 80s Nostalgia and Otherworldly Adventures

Last year, Glasgow University Union transformed into the enigmatic and electrifying world of Hawkins, Indiana, for its annual extravaganza - Daft Friday. Embracing the theme of the cult-favorite series, 'Stranger Things', the event took us on a nostalgic journey back to the 1980s, complete with all the thrills and chills of the beloved show.

A Venue Transformed

As I stepped through the doors, it was like entering an alternate reality. The iconic GUU building, with its historic charm, was ingeniously morphed into the eerie and adventurous world of 'Stranger Things'. From the mock-up of Hawkins' lab to a recreation of the Byers' living room, complete with flickering lights and alphabet wall, every detail was meticulously crafted to immerse attendees in the show's ambiance.

The Heart of the Party: The People

The true spirit of Daft Friday, however, was embodied by the students themselves. Their energy and creativity brought the theme to life in a kaleidoscope of black-tie fashion, supernatural entities, and nods to the series' characters. The effort and enthusiasm were palpable.

Music and Memories

The music, a blend of 80s hits and contemporary beats, set the perfect backdrop for the night. The DJs, stationed at various points in the union, ensured that the energy never waned. The dance floor was a time warp – a space where the present and the past collided in a celebration of youth, fun, and the unexplainable.

Capturing Moments

As a photographer, capturing the essence of Daft Friday was both a challenge and a delight. Each click of my camera was an attempt to freeze a moment of this extraordinary night - a laugh, a dance move, a look of surprise, or a shared glance between friends. These photos, a collection of memories, now serve as a portal back to that unforgettable evening.

Looking Forward

As we anticipate this year's Daft Friday, the question on everyone’s lips is, "How will they top last year's theme?" But if history has taught us anything, it’s that Glasgow University Union never disappoints. The only certainty is that it will be a night of surprises, camaraderie, and unforgettable experiences.

Stay tuned for my coverage of this year's Daft Friday – where the only expectation is the unexpected!
